Goal 1:

Más educación/More Education

Develop a comprehensive scholarship program designed to allow young women to advance their lives.

In Chwitzirib'al (chu-eet-zoo-ree-ball), a rural village in the department of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala there is one small primary school. To attend school beyond sixth grade, students must travel to classrooms in the nearby cities of Cantel or Xela. High tuition prices, transportation, uniforms, school supplies, and preferential treatment of sons over daughters are among the many deterrents that keep young women in this community from achieving a secondary education. This lack of education prevents the young women from breaking the enslaving cycles of poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion.

The young women in Chwitzirib'al have the right to an education beyond primary school but are not able to pursue it.

In Guatemala, many people and organizations are working to empower the young women who find themselves at the bottom of the social ladder. But they have not reached this community. We feel we cannot be apathetic and wait for others to reach the young women of Chwitzirib'al.  We are seeking to create opportunities for other young people to take control of their education.
